Sisarishun
In my artwork, I depict my Hatun Mamá (Grandmother) as a part of nature. I use the tiny paths of time (wrinkles) that surround her face to envision shapes of nature. The veins of her hands as stems, her face as river paths and the shape of hair braid as a tree trunk. This is a representation of the strength and resilience of Indigenous women who have been caretakers of knowledge for generations. Through the use of embroidery, I bring an important part of my community into my artwork. Embroidering plays an important role in the Kichwa Otavalo community since it’s how women use this artform to create blouses for themselves, their daughters or other women of the family.
